Sarah Van Loo smiles in her classroom.

Students at A2 STEAM Middle School aren’t just building, coding, and testing robots—they’re developing teamwork, problem-solving skills, and a strong sense of inclusion.

That commitment to outreach and making space for every student recently earned educator Sarah Van Loo a prestigious international honor. She was selected for the 2026 Inspire the Future: FIRST Recognition Program Educator Cohort, one of only 15 educators chosen from more than 400 nominees worldwide.

For many of the children at Westerman Preschool and Family Center, this week marks something that hasn’t happened before: a field trip for everyone.

Students are visiting We Rock the Spectrum, an Ann Arbor indoor play space designed around sensory-based activity, with an emphasis on gross motor development, social and emotional learning, and support for neurodivergent children.

Christine Woodson sits in a chair in her classroom on the edge of a rug, with her students around the edge of the rug listening.

I believe that strong relationships are the foundation of meaningful learning. As a teacher, I make it a priority to build trust and respect with my students so they feel comfortable, supported, and ready to learn. I work to get to know each student as an individual, recognizing their strengths, interests, goals, and challenges, because I know that meaningful connections help students feel valued and motivated to learn in the classroom.
